Extra-Geekular Days
Non-Computer Stuff
Kids, there's a big, wide world out there, and
I tasted a bit of it when I dropped out of school
for a while. What was life like, that it drove me
into software as a profession? (Actually some of
this was during my earlier software weenie days.)
In no particular order...
- WREK
(campus radio) news staff, occasional DJ, EE geek
- Technique
(campus paper) record reviewer & live music reporter
- sold flowers on street corners (Sunshine Floral Co, Atlanta)
- worked in a coffeehouse (Midtown Light & Trust, Atlanta)
- musician (de rigeur) [guitar,
bass,
vocals,
writing]
- roadie for other groups
- sound man for other groups
- built automatic chicken feeders & orthopedic mattresses at
The Mighty Spinks Company
[1]
(with Mark Heard).
- everything you can do in fast food, up thru assistant manager
- McDonalds - 1 week
- Arby's - 2 summers
- Burger King - 10 months (I left when they insisted I go to
Whopper College)
- tree cutter (1 day)
- shipping & receiving clerk (Saks 5th Avenue)
- panhandler, bum, hippie
- gofer for hire
- printing, binding, assembly
(PC-USA HQ)
- sharpened carbide-tipped tools (R&L Tool, Atlanta)
- managed a shop (R&L Tool, Atlanta)
- book & music retail (Midtown Light & Trust, Atlanta)
- stereo & sound system sales & installation
(Melton's HiFi & PA, Atlanta)
- typewriter repair
- short order cook, dishwasher, counter help
(Junoir's Fancy French Fried Cuisine
[2], Atlanta)
- my attempted career as a dentist
And I did most of these before I was 25.
